F.A.Q.
Some frequently asked questions about
diving and about out club are shown below.
|
Q
|
Isn't diving dangerous? |
|
A
|
Like driving a car, flying in a plane
or even crossing the road diving can be extremely dangerous if it
isn't done corectly. That is why great emphasis is placed on safety
and training within the club. In the 50 years it has been in existence,
ISAC has never suffered a fatality. |

Q
|
Isn't diving an expensive hobby? |
|
A
|
Initially, no. To start training, you will need to
buy your own mask, fins, snorkel and weight belt (total cost about
fifty pounds). The club will lend you more expensive items that
you will need for training (e.g. cylinder). |

Q
|
How fit do you need to be? |
|
A
|
You don't need to be very fit to dive. If you can
swim eight lengths of a standard pool, you should be fine. Your
webmaster speaks from experience when he says that a few extra pounds
of weight helps keep you warm when diving in chilly British waters. |

|
| Q |
What about medical conditions? |
| A |
Some medical conditions such as epilepsy, burst eardrums
or asthma can preclude safe diving. Each year, club members need
to complete a medical questionaire. If you answer yes to any of
the questions, then you will need to be certified fit by a doctor.
This can sometimes be done by phone or by your own GP. For further
details, see the BSAC
medical section. |

Q
|
I can qualify in 2 or 3 days on a holiday course.
Why join a club? |
|
A
|
The short courses you can take at holiday resorts
or in the UK are nearly always run by commercial organisations.
They will spend less time training you than a BSAC club and they
will not take an interest in developing your skills. Diving clubs
are also social organisations. You can dive at weekends and on trips
organised by the club. |
